Breweries have always been a special place for my wife and I. Early in our dating days, we realized we both love craft beer, and the places that brew it. They are an easy and fun date night if you don’t have anything else to do. This was one of the many reasons I chose to propose at a brewery. And that brewery is the one we’ll be talking about today. Pegasus City Brewery is unique in that it’s one of the only breweries actually in downtown Dallas.

Located on Commerce St almost to the intersection with Ervay St, Pegasus City Brewery sits right in downtown in the old Dallas Power and Light building that has been there since 1931. And just like all of downtown, there is zero parking, but there is a parking lot a few blocks away, and they have a code to park for free. They don’t have food, outside of small snacks, and there’s no room for a food truck, so that’s a bit of a downside. You walk in the front door and you’re immediately greeted by a huge bar with the menu behind. There’s seating to the left and right, almost setup at random, and there’s a pool table and an old arcade machine to the left. Back farther to the left are the bathrooms, and they’re definitely from the era. To the right is the to-go fridge and a big glass window looking into the brewing area. I wish it was more integrated into the tap room, but the tanks being visible is still a huge plus. There’s merch hung at random throughout the space as well. On the right wall is an exit to the outdoor patio. It’s a huge space with a ton of seating, games, and even a couple of Pegasuses. There are no TVs, so don’t expect to catch a game here, but they seem to have an interactive theme going. Put your technology down, drink a beer, and talk with friends or strangers, which I kinda like. When you walk in, you almost feel like you’re back in the 30’s. The high ceilings, the fixtures, the crown molding, it’s a very beautiful space. Add in the random decor, and a ton of callbacks to Dallas lore, it’s such a cool spot.

If you have a brewery in downtown Dallas, I’d be disappointed if they didn’t name beers after some local culture and history. So the Sixth Floor Porter was a must try. It’s an easy porter with a 5.4% ABV. They say it’s meant to be light so it can be enjoyed year round, but it felt weak to me. It didn’t have the mouth feel of a porter, and the aromas of caramel and toffee usually with that brew were very soft and diluted. Just not what I was hoping for or expecting from that beer.

One very unique brew that we enjoyed was the Century Gold- Barley Champs. It’s a 12.5% ABV Bière de Champagne, which is a rare, specialty style beer meant to taste similar to champagne. It’s slightly sweet and dry, with hints of fruit, and the carbonation really helps to give the illusion of champagne. It was very interesting, and quite refreshing.

By far the best brew of the day was the Don Law brown ale, a 6.4% ABV English style brown ale. Don Law was a well known record producer and music executive around Dallas, so the name is great, but the beer is even better. It’s sweet, which the English style is known for, and has the nutty and caramel notes you’d expect. This was one of the best English brown ale’s I’ve had.

Pegasus City Brewery is everything I’d want from a brewery in downtown Dallas. They pay tribute to the city’s history, they are in a historic building, and they brew some good beer. We were a little disappointed with one, but that happens from time to time. Not having food is a killer, especially since food trucks are not an option here. We love the vibe they’ve created, and in this case, no TVs are a welcome idea. Because of our experience here today, we’re giving Pegasus City Brewery a 8 🍺 rating! It’s a must experience brewery for Dallas, and Always Drink Local!
